Eugene T. Johnston, Sr., age 93, died on May 26, 2018. Eugene was born in Woodstock, IL to Benjamin C. and Genevieve Salzman Johnston. He was married to Evelyn Shaub Johnston for 65 years until her death in 2012.
A highly decorated WWll veteran, Senior Chief Johnston proudly served in the US Navy (Airborne) both on active and reserve duty as a flight engineer for 34 years. He was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross as well as other awards and commendations.
Gene’s artistic ability was recognized at a young age and as an adult he was able to use his skills to design and hand letter on public display using gold and silver leaf and guilding. His craftsmanship included neon signs as well as custom copper metal work, and many other artistic endeavors.
He is survived by his children: sons, E. Thomas Johnston, Jr. of Columbia, Michael Johnston, of Millersville and Eric Johnston, of Millersville; daughters: Elizabeth Johnston of Millersville, Kathleen Johnston, of Columbia and Elissa Eshleman, wife of Scott, of Myerstown; four grandchildren and five great-grandchildren and one sister, Ruth Schaal of Ontario, California.
Besides his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by one sister, Ann, and three brothers, Benjamin, Robert and William.
The family will receive friends at the Smedley-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, 29 North Gay Street, Marietta, PA 17547, 717-426-3614, on Friday, June 1, 2018 from 6 PM – 8 PM.
Interment with full military honors at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery, Annville, will be at a future date.
