John P. Reuter, 91, of Marietta, passed away at the Lebanon VA Hospice Center on Monday, February 6th. He was the loving husband of the late Carol L. Reuter with whom he shared 43 years of marriage. John was born in and lived his entire life in Marietta, where he most recently resided with his daughter, which John (with a laugh) referred to as payback.

John graduated from Marietta High School, where he was 7th in his class. Basketball was his favorite sport in high school. He loved offense and loved to shoot the ball. Old school newspapers indicated he was more often than not the high scorer. He joked once that a little boy told his mother that he wanted to play his position. The little boy said, “the one that gets to shoot”.

After graduation, John proudly served his country in the US Air Force during WWII and was a member of the Marietta American Legion. For many years he prepared the playing fields for the town Little League baseball games. He was often accompanied to the park by one of his collies. He also served on the Marietta Boro Council, where he was elected President. He received the Lions Club Outstanding Citizen Award along with his wife Carol.

Until his retirement, John was the financial manager of the Installment Loan Company in Columbia.

In recent years, John became a loyal Phillies and Hokies fan. He also liked TV game shows and especially enjoyed his trips to the casino (win or lose) with his son and friend, Teet. Most of all, he looked forward to phone calls from Cynthia, Ryan and Eyreka.

John is survived by his three children: his son, William (Bill) G. Reuter (Jean) of Mount Joy and daughters: Barbara L. Kauffman (Stan) of Marietta and Cynthia L. Swenson (Jim) of Midlothian, VA. Also surviving are his cherished grandchildren: Ryan Swenson Midlothian, VA and Eyreka Swenson, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his brother Charles E. Reuter, sister Minnie Hamilton Raber, Uncle Tommy and friend Uncas Zink.

The family is extremely grateful for the compassionate care John received at the VA. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Lebanon VA Medical Center Hospice at LebanonVa.gov

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.
